Live Action Star Wars TV Series News

Producer Rick McCallum has spilled the beans to both the BBC and Empire magazine on the upcoming Star Wars live action television series. He told BBC Radio 1 the writing team would soon be meeting to start on the project, which would begin filming in 2008 and be ready the same year, running a minimum of 100 episodes. It would cover the first 20 years in the life of young Luke Skywalker.
"That's not going to happen probably for another year and a half while we develop scripts and everything else. But it's fantastic; we've got some incredible writers. It's going to be much darker, much more character-based, and I think it's going to be everything the fans always wanted the prequels to be. They'll be one-hour episodes. It takes place between Episodes III and IV. It's going to be all-new characters, maybe a few bounty hunters in there to start the series off."
"Hopefully if we can make it work and everybody's excited and watches it we will keep on going," said McCallum.
Great to hear that they are really committed to this project, but why young Luke's story? I thought the idea was that his life was really boring before he hitched a ride with Old Ben to Alderaan. How many stories about Biggs, Fixer and Camie in the desert can they come up with? Better yet would be a series about young Han Solo- his life with the Wookies, getting in trouble with his buddy Lando, encounters with bounty hunters, and the story of the Falcon. The possibilities are much more exciting and endless!

Wow. While I'm excited by the idea of a Star Wars TV show, is fleshing out Luke's backstory a worthwhile endeavor?
We got just enough of his history to tell us that his life was a boring go-nowhere existence. Do we really need the details of such a plain upbringing? Is this going to be Little House on the Space Dune?
What could be more boring than seeing a cocky, inexperiened Luke hanging out with his friends and shirking his chores, set entirely on Tatooine, and without any knowledge of the force, even! It was also made clear in the first movie (ANH) and in the radio play that Luke had never even strayed as far as Mos Eisley Spaceport- so are we going to see any creatures besides Jawas and Sandpeople?
It would be a waste to take the huge, rich, Star Wars universe and stay at the Lars homestead for 100 episodes. I'm afraid that this is just going to create more plot holes in a universe that already resembles swiss cheese.
The story of a young Han Solo leading up to the beginning of A New Hope, on the other hand, would make for some brilliant entertainment. We really don't know much about Han, but we do know that he's got a rich and colorful past- and it'd be great to see more of those Wookies we didn't spend enough time with in ROTS.
